Maris Racal’s ‘Sunshine’ set for uncut release in PH cinemas

After winning hearts on the global stage, “Sunshine,” the critically acclaimed coming-of-age film starring Maris Racal is finally making its way to Philippine cinemas this July 2025.
The best part? The film will be shown completely uncut, bearing its R-16 rating from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

Announcing the homecoming on X (formerly Twitter), the “Incognito” actress shared a photo with the caption: “R-16 Next, PHILIPPINES! THIS JULY.”

Project 8 Projects, the production company behind the film, also celebrated the news online, affirming, “NO CUTS PO TAYO OPO! Basta 16 years old pataas puwedeng puwede manood ng #SunshineMovie. COMING SOON IN PHILIPPINE CINEMAS THIS JULY 2025.”
The announcement was met with a flurry of excitement online, including a delighted comment from actress and fellow Pinoy Big Brother alum Xyriel Manabat who exclaimed, “FINALLLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!”
During the film’s premiere in Udine, Italy, Racal shared that she could not wait to bring the film home to the country: “Excited na kaming iuwi ang Sunshine para sa inyo!”
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Antoinette Jadaone, “Sunshine” follows the story of a teenage athlete, played by Racal, who finds herself in the midst of a life-defining crossroad, juggling rigorous training for the national team while dealing with an unplanned pregnancy.
Her emotional journey deepens with the appearance of a mysterious character, revealing profound truths about love, resilience and what it truly means to grow up.
Following its debut at the 2024 Berlinale, where it won the Crystal Bear for Best Film in the Generation 14plus section, “Sunshine” has continued to gain international momentum.
Indiecan Entertainment has picked up North American distribution rights, including theatrical and digital releases, as well as remake rights for an English-language adaptation. Indiecan’s Avi Federgreen is attached to direct the upcoming version, with production support from Federgreen Entertainment and Michaelangelo Masangkay’s Sine Media Inc.
